Frequently Asked Questions
Phosphates generally come from leaf matter and pollens, but other reasons could be the dog likes to swim in the pool, or even urine (from children we hope). Phosphates have the potential to feed and encourage algae growth in your swimming pool. This in turn uses more chlorine as the chlorine fights to control the algae. Phosphates are completely treatable, please ask us to do a phosphate test if you have any concerns.

Generally, a solution of 1-part Hydrochloric Acid to 10 parts water is used to clean a salt cell, however there are specialised cleaning solutions available – talk to our store staff.
• Fill cell-cleaning container with pre-mixed solution and immerse cell plates, ensuring full coverage.
• Soak cell plates and replace cleaning solution whenever activity ceases, until cell is totally clean. Solution will bubble when active.
• If complete cell housing is removed, then cap one end and stand vertically but securely. Pour cleaning solution into cell to activate. Replace solution when activity is neutral until cell is clean.
• Once clean, hose cell plates and reinstall.

Chlorine kills bacteria like salmonella and E. coli, as well as germs that cause viruses such as diarrhea and swimmer’s ear. It also kills algae and oxidizes (chemically destroys) other materials such as dirt and chloramines. Your chlorine may be low for a variety of reasons.
• Low production due to reduced salt levels, dirty cell, or perhaps faulty equipment.
• Chlorine output is too low for the usage of your pool.
• Stabiliser levels are not high enough to protect the chlorine for the sun burning it up.
• Phosphates in the pool.
We can help you with the analysis of your water and expert analysis of your pool setup.

There are many reasons for staining in pools. The main ones are
• from salt (cheap unrefined salt or not brushing it in)
• metal (copper, iron and rust)
• organic matter (leaves, berries and nuts).
Copper stains can occur when algaecides are added to the pool with an inferior chlorine blend. If your pool goes green it is wise to get us to test your water first so we can advise on the correct algaecide and method of use. Ask us to do a copper test if you have any concerns.
You can chemically treat the pool with a stain remover, however there is no guarantee that this will remove them completely, as it can depend on the cause and how long they have been there. But it is always worth a try before going to the next step of emptying the pool and acid washing the surface.
Stain removal chemicals require the chlorine level to be dropped so it is best done over winter months as there is less likelihood of your pool turning (Green) in the cooler months.
